Posted - 22 Oct 2009 : 8:03:17 PM Hi there, Could do with some advice ---- my 5 year old Arab mare has very high, wide ribs(real barrel), is croup high, very short backed and still hasn't fully developed in front and although she has a better front than last year there is nothing to stop a saddle sliding forward. Arab saddle company saddles look good but are WAY out of my price range. GP saddle is too forward cut and sits on her shoulders, I can't ride long enough to use a dressage saddle. I have had her in a Wintec VSD with cair until 3 months ago but now the widest gullet isn't wide enough.....2 master saddlers have had no success in finding something to fit as yet! I hack her out, ride endurance and dressage and have just started showing! Any advice gratefully accepted................ |

Posted - 14 Jan 2010 : 8:44:33 PM I have been through six saddles now i think in the last year. No 1 Ideal Jessica - told by saddler would not ever fit as it was not a flat tree. No 2 Ideal Grandee - As above No 3 Wintec 2000 - Bounced on back end and went up neck. No 4 Lovett and Ricketts show saddle - up neck No 5 Henry De rivell GP(I think) - up neck No 6 Ideal ramsey - up neck
Last three saddles were fitted by master saddlers and also had second opinions on all saddles. All saddlers insisted the saddle fit my flat backed mare but yet they all end up - up the neck! I am really upset now! I have tried loads of different grip pads but still - up the neck! |

Posted - 23 Nov 2009 : 7:28:16 PM I have for sale an Arabian Saddle Company Showring saddle (which is fairly straight cut but still has a knee roll), which is fitted with flair so it is adjustable to fit just about any horse, tree is a wide. I used it on a wide, very flat brood mare as well as a wide but much leaner gelding. Black 17" in immaculate order £400, PM if you are interested, I can email you photos. Cheers, Linette |

Posted - 12 Nov 2009 : 7:59:57 PM My girl has the problem of saddles that shoot forwards, which then means I'm ejected out over her head!
She has a FnE with crupper, no slide forward issues - a second hand one of those would do you as new ones are expensive |

Posted - 12 Nov 2009 : 02:04:46 AM Following a visit from my saddler, my 4 year old mare is now also in a Thorowgood T4, so far we're both happy with it, despite my initial resistance to a synthetic saddle, but that's what fitted her best . It's certainly a lot nicer than the synthetics I remember, and it can be altered as she grows, which is a plus. |

Posted - 11 Nov 2009 : 5:30:59 PM Another fan of the Thorowgood T4 cob. My mare (who looks quite petite) ended up needing an extra wide gullet! |

Posted - 10 Nov 2009 : 8:53:05 PM My last arab was very wide, no withers! had a fab reactorpanel saddle that i used for years, was fab, no muscle wastage, moved like a dream. It is for sale, swomeone on other forum interested, if no good for them will let you know. My newbie has withers and definatly not as wide so not sure it will be any good... |

Posted - 10 Nov 2009 : 4:43:01 PM The consensus appears to be that Wintecs don't fit Arabs terribly well (the one I tried certainly didn't!). My fat old mare and her younger but fatter daughter shared the same Morris & Nolan GP, but they were both atypical for fat Arabs in that they also had withers!.
A lot of people on here seem to get on well with the Thorowgood T4, though that seems limited to smaller sizes now?

Posted - 24 Oct 2009 : 7:30:55 PM I love my Reactor panel saddle. I have 2 endurance's ones and a VSD. Plenty of room for the shoulder to move, easy to fit and adjust too and so comfortable to ride in.

Posted - 24 Oct 2009 : 7:26:07 PM The Thorowgood XXW gullet is wider than the widest Wintec - the T4 Cob seems to be a good fit for arabs. |

Posted - 22 Oct 2009 : 10:11:14 PM Hi both, Thanks for the info, will stay with a VSD to give her the freedom of her big walk and therefore will go on looking for something that will give me enough room while not, as with her Wintec VSD, coming outside the margin of her last rib! |

Posted - 22 Oct 2009 : 8:28:58 PM Hi Jackie, i have had the same problem finding a saddle for my barrel mare! I found the answer in the form of a Wintec Wide(the one with purple gulletts)and four girth straps especially for the wider horse! They also are very resonably priced!
Hope this helps,
Jo

Posted - 22 Oct 2009 : 8:17:04 PM Hi
Arabs and saddles that fit are a long running issue! I personally like either a working hunter cut or a VSD because it frees up the shoulder, but at the end of the day it's going with whatever fits your horse (and you of course)
Here is a link to a recent AL thread on saddles, and I'm sure you will find more if you search the topic!

Good luck! The search for the perfect saddle is a bit like the search for the holy grail I fear... |
