There is a lot of opinion around whether to spay before or after first season. Before first season almost eliminates the risk of mammary cancer, however some say small risk of incontinence later but that can be easily treated. I know which I would rather deal with.
My vet advises before as quicker recovery.
However I value any advice and experience.

Day 5 and still on lead for outings. She loves the car so that's kept her occupied going everywhere with me in her travel crate. Have to admit she is now loose in house and garden and to be honest I was exhausted and she is calmer for a bit of freedom.
Poor girl has a bit of clipper rash well away from op which will heal in no time but has totally distracted her from bothering the important bit, every cloud etc.
Took her a quick visit to local horse show yesterday to learn the important skill of chilling whilst mum watches very slow long classes. |

Pleased to hear that all is well with Dolly .. retreat to the crate.. love it! It can be hard to keep them calm and quiet for the time but it really is so important to get a well healed wound. |

Pup been back for vet check all ok. I am in the crate with a glass of dry white lol |

So glad she is doing well, you could just go in the crate yourself and let them all get on with it (until feeding time of course!) |

Dolly had the op yesterday and came home so well, eating and doing all business normally. Outside is easy on lead but I am struggling to keep her 100% good girl indoors. Not sure who best to put in the crate the pup, her cat pals or aged terrier lol.
She has a tiny wound, just over an inch and no external stitches. I took the safe option to have full blood tests done just in case there were any problems. I was so worried until I knew all was well.
I now know that I have a well checked healthy pup. We go back tomorrow day 3 for vet check and day 10 for nurse check.

In the 1970's when we had our first dog, vet recommended spaying before first season. We never had any problems with her and we enjoyed 12 years with her. Then the next time we had a bitch all had changed and vets insisted aprox 3 months after first season. Now it appears has gone Back to the old ideas. My daughter had to wait for her Akita to have her first season but 3 months later she had still not fully gone out. In the end they had to spay even though she was not fully out of season and vets said this could cause problems but in fact she was ok. |

Sometimes things go wrong. We had a litter and one we sold was spayed at six months. She died on the table, they said she may have made it if a bit older. We had the one we kept done much later. She was an Airdale. |

I appreciate your trusted experience. Dolly is a very calm easy to train pup so I have no behaviour concerns. She continues to amaze me how quick she learns and how she has got on with 2 cats and the aged very fit Dex. Bless her she is consistent in her recall and training despite Dex going off after everything that moves.

Ive had alot of bitches spayed in the last 10 years and the advice from vets has moved steadily towards spaying before the first season... I do believe that this makes it an easier operation for the vets and I have no doubt that the risks of surgery are slightly lower. The cancer statistics in my opinion are much more likely to be reflective of the increasingly processed diets and management our dogs are exposed to and the general increase in cancer cases could make any change in specific cancer look significant.
The biggest effect I believe it has is behaviorally, bitches spayed after their first season I have found to be more mature and calm down quicker whilst the ones spayed around 6 months have remained puppy like in behavior for much longer. This is particularly noticeable in 2 sister Jack russels belonging to 2 different friends, they were very similar in temperaments one was spayed early and is still a nutty tearaway and her sister is not a tearaway but still sensitive.
My personal choice would be to wait for her first season to allow her to fully mature... however I think your decision is a great one and whenever you do it I'm sure Dolly will be just fine.

I had my Boogie done before her first season, my vet recommended this and she did recover quickly and I've never regretted the decision. |

After first season....
I didn't think they usually get MC til later in life? My boss had her youngest done before and always regretted it.
