Ok, I know it's shallow, but I do NOT want to have to shave every day on holiday, so I'm going to wax.
Now, I have tried it once before, but it hurt too much so I only did one strip,  
I had a place picked out but cannot get in touch with them - everywhere else seems to be twice the price.
So my question is, - is it less painful if you have it done in a salon? Or should I just get someone else to pull the strips off at home? |

I think it depends on your pain threshold, mine's really low so I'd be like a jelly if I went. Dont they recommend that your skin is warm first before they start. |

You set of wusses!!
I decided on creams, and bought some on saturday. But I also got a small pack of strips, just to see. I've done bits on my legs and bikini line, and it is nowhere near as bad as you lot had me thinking!
But it was taking ages as they're only little strips, so I'll stick with the creams I've bought. I won't be afraid to wax in future though  |

I'm allergic to the creams so definitley do a patch test, really stings and stays red for days, no fun if you're on hols |

Lol, you guys make me laugh!
I feel so horrid and disgusting with hairy legs (I'm dark, so it really shows), so I'm currently hiding from my OH  
I think I'll go with the cream, safest option. I normally shave but I'm just not convinced I'll get a long enough shower on this 'Basic' tour! |

I think you're all completely mad! I shave about twice a year, whether I need to or not (wink). I completely don't believe in being in any kind of pain at all for my 'beauty'! I'm with you, buffy, I need all the hair I can get to keep the warmth in!
Make sure you have a new, good razor and just give it a few minutes in the shower, sounds perfectly reasonable to me! Spend the money you save on something FUN! |

lol...dont do it!!! my mate had it done a week before she went on hols and she said it killed then came up in a hurrendous reaction and had to stay fully clothed and itchy and sore in 30 degees!!!! |

Honestly, salon is best! However, there are preparations to do before you have any part waxed to make it work best.
Exfoliate the area(s) the day before which will prevent ingrown hair after the event, and it will also remove loose cells of skin so that the wax takes better hold of the hair.
Painkillers ideal if you are worried about that side of things.
Also, do not have your bikini area done when you are having your period, or during a couple of days either side of it. The skin in that area is much more sensitive then.
If you are planning on a decent amount of swimwear-wearing, do go for a bikini wax, at least. There are areas here that only a professional waxer can do properly! Depending on when you are going, why not have a trial first? |

When the weather is this cold and I'm wearing many layers, having hairy legs is a positive advantage!!!
Sometimes I think I should be more 'high maintainance'!!!

Ooh, I LOVE having my legs waxed - really relaxing (I could doze off)! Under arms too but no-one's going near my bikini line, thank you very much!

Professional, leg and bikini,have mine done every 5 weeks or so, slightly longer in winter. Doesnt hurt anymore, in fact find it quite relaxing. Only downside is that where I wear boots all the time (horses dictate you do), the hair is short and stubbly, so never gets truly waxed!!!

I'd definitely go to a salon, as it is difficult to get stray hairs at the back of your legs and although I can wax my own legs, there is NO WAY I am brave enough to do my bikini line!! I tried it once and it took me about 2 hours to do both sides and at one point I had tears in my eyes it was so painful!!!
What I have since bought in an epilator.........yes they are a bit painful to use on the bikini line, but fab on my legs and last me a good 3 weeks before any sign of hairs coming back. Waxing only seems to last me 11 days or so before I can see re-growth! |

I'd need a badge too Nichole!! I am a wuss, so perhaps the cream is the best way to go. I can handle doing it weekly, I'm sure!
What brand do you use?
We're going to Central America - an organised tour through Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. 'Basic' level of comfort, and we're warned to expect the possibility of 'the odd cold shower'  , and I guess the facilities won't be great, so I'm after convenience with a capital C!

How about getting yourself a good epilator?
It hurts like hell the first couple of times you do it, but after that it seems less painful, you need to stick with it and not give up after the first attempt and don't go doing your bikini line the first time, try somewhere tougher. The effect lasts a lot longer than creams or shaving as it takes the roots out. |

I'm with you Nichole on the pain front, tried it once at home-too painful!! I've been pleased with the cream for bikini line, lasts a week or so and hair seems finer when it regrows, hope that helps Kelly, it's definitely less painful and pretty quick too! I had my legs waxed many years ago in a salon and i screamed the place down . They even gave me a badge to wear afterwards that said 'I've been a brave girl'  I've never been since and just resigned myself to the fact that i'll have to shave them for the rest of my life....
I just use hair removal cream for bikini area when i go on holiday.
I think different people have different pain thresholds (and maybe tougher hairs... ), my sister-in-law has her legs and bikini area waxed regularly and she says it doesn't hurt  |

Well, if you want your full leg and bikini done, I would say go to the salon! I usually have mine done, tho my last appointment was cancelled due to the snow so I did it at home...
I have the proper salon wax and heater, and have done mine loads but I still managed to bruise the back of my upper leg as its hard to get the angle right on your own... (and I did miss bits at the back too!)
If you have never had it done in full, just take some painkillers before you go, will help ease it a little. |
