if anyone is in the Camber Sands/Lydd area or knows people there, a bay Thoroughbred gelding has gone missing. The horse and rider 'parted company' and the horse bolted with full tack. Missing since Friday 8th January. Owners are desperate to find him. This is the text I took from Facebook....and it has been on the local news tonight.

"Rebecca Pearson DARK BAY THOROUGHBRED STILL MISSING, 16H, CLIPPED, STILL HAS TACK ON. CAMBER SANDS/ LYDD AREA. IF ANYONE IN LOCAL AREA CAN HELP SEARCH OR HAS SEEN HIM PLEASE CALL 07887718451"

We had a highland cow that went missing for two weeks. The police thought she was SAS trained as she was so good at evading capture. We eventually found her on a rough piece of land and had to dart her with a tranquiliser. She covered an area including roads beside Sheffield Wednesday Football ground, a local nature trail and open fields. I make this point because the police helicopter could not find her, it was reports from the local radio listeners that helped us track her.
I hope Zimbabwe is found alive and well, though the firing range complicates things.

This is the latest from the Racing Post

PERMIT holder Philip Sharp has virtually given up hope of finding Zimbabwe alive after an air search failed to find any trace of his missing hurdler.

Zimbabwe has not been seen since galloping loose on to a military firing range in Kent after unseating his rider while being exercised on the adjacent Camber Sands on January 8.

On Sunday, a helicopter chartered by an anonymous supporter of the Racehorse Sanctuary and Re-Homing Centre in West Sussex, carried out an aerial reconnaissance of the 22 square-mile Ministy of Defence facility near Lydd, which is believed to contain several unexploded bombs, but had no success.

On board were Sharp, Sergeant Warren Downs of Sussex Police, and Army officers based at the range.

Sharp, who is now planning to distribute missing posters in the local area, said: "He is either dead or has been stolen, but the helicopter search was pretty thorough.

"There is a possibility he might have been hiding in a particular position in the trees, and we didn't see him, but you would have thought he would have been spooked by the noiseand run around, but there was no sign of anything.

"We have done some missing posters, and I have got to talk to the police about circulating them, but unfortunately there isn't a lot of hope left I am sorry to say."

Didn't realise he'd gone onto the ranges. Goldenmane - if he's on MOD land they won't allow you on to search. And it's a MASSIVE area. Poor horse. Hope he's OK.

I would never give up. I don't care what he's won, or hasn't won, I would be out there day and night looking for my horse.

As I have found out in the past it is very easy to simply lose a horse even on 35 acre of land. Pristina my anglo was with the herd when I checked them in the morning but in the afternoon was missing. I searched and searched for hours until I had to give up at 2am when my torch stopped working. Fearing the worst we went home til first light, to find the little madam grazing with the rest of the herd, totally unaware of the distress she had caused. I have no idea where she went.
That is a large area to cover, I wouldn't be giving up hope after a week.

From the Racing Post:
THE owner-trainer of the hurdler who galloped loose onto a military firing range in Kent accepted on Friday that the six-time winner "is most probably dead" having been missing for a week.

Owned and trained by Philip Sharp, Zimbabwe escaped onto the 22 square mile range after unseating his rider while being exercised on adjacent Camber Sands.

"It has been a week now," said Sharp, "and I reluctantly must accept that poor Zimbabwe is most probably dead.

"My worst fear is that he is out there somewhere badly injured and suffering terribly. I'm desperately anxious to find him, and then at least I can give him a proper burial."

Sharp has not been allowed to conduct a thorough search of the Ministry of Defence's property due to security restrictions and added: "It is also ridiculous that three sides of the range have 12ft high razor-topped fencing, while there is no protection whatsoever from the beach - children have wandered off across the dunes onto the site.

"I wanted to get a helicopter up with an infrared camera, but they wouldn't let me."

Sharp also said that he considered it unlikely that the horse had returned to the beach and drowned, explaining: "I checked with the coastguard and they've had no reports of a horse being washed up."

An MOD spokesman said they were doing everything possible to find the 10-year-old, whose wins include the 2003 Irish Cesarewitch for his breeder Sheikh Mohammed and former trainer John Oxx. His most recent win came in a Fontwell selling hurdle in April 2007, when trained by Gary Moore.

I was also wondering if there was any news?

On one occasion that my mum came off her horse, the mare bolted, and she couldn't find her. She heard through word of mouth three weeks later that someone had her in their stable. They had made NO attempt to find her owner or anything. Barstewards.

I also worry about Jack running off if I come off while out riding. A friend told me that, everytime I get off, I should turn him to face me. So that if I'm off, he knows to turn and face me and stand still.

Also, desensitise him to things falling off his back. Do it in 'controlled circumstances' at slow speeds. Get to where you can bounce a large ball (pilates type) onto his back and off again, landing around him.

does anyone have any news please?
Evie Posted - 13 Jan 2010 : 9:51:49 PM
Hope he is found soon. I would hate this, which is why I try my very best to stay on Tara when I am out riding as the only time anyone's fallen off her she's bolted, I think someone falling off scares her silly!! Luckily the only time someone has fallen off her its been in an enclosed arena!
Kash Posted - 13 Jan 2010 : 8:34:28 PM
Any news? Hopefully he's been found safe and is tucked up in his stable now!

Good thanks Anna! Funnily enough Louie's not looking so well again, another trip to the vet... How're you and yours?

Anna, how awful, cant help feeling he has got into the wrong hands!!!
camber sands can be dangerous, my stepsister broker her collar bone, whilst riding on the sands a few years ago, was cantering and mare went down in a sand/mud hole and completly tumbled.

Is Camber Sands a safe place to ride???, could he have got into trouble in the sea/sand ???. Have the police been informed ??? Some stations put lost and found's in a book on the front desk and sometimes they don't get or go any further..so if the animal strays into another police area, they dont tell each other..Best bet, after speaking to the police and getting a national reference number, is to get on the Radio or even the TV news.

If a horse got into trouble and was washed out to sea with the tide (I dont know this area at all so just surmising) where would the body turn up..Could tehy not speak to the Lifeboat folks and ask these questions...
If the horse was taken in by someone who could not keep him...there is only a few days before the horse could be sold..that could mean him going to a horse auction and sold under the hammer...cheap and without reserve...maybe...

Has the owner spoke to the Horsewatch folks, they usually know about tracing horses...
Good Luck with this one..
Sue

A pal of mine rang me a few weeks back to say that two shetlands had gone missing from the field opposite to hers, they'd found the gate off and the ponies gone...I made a few enquires and. I've never heard any thing back,, non of my enquires were returned...so weeks later I still don;t know if these ponies are missing or not..

Hope this horse turns up and hope they tell us..

A few years ago I was doinga 20mile Endurance ride in cheshire..I galloped to the top of the Old Pound and on the way up I passed agirl on the ground, her horse had dropped her and galloped off ahead and into the woods, I offered to help and she said no don't bother get on and watch the clock, we have to ride at 7 mph..she said my pal has gone after him..... Little did she know at that time, that her pal caught up with her horse grabbed him and he galloped off and pulled free, her own horse also pulled free and they both galloped off out of sight and into the woods......
I got back to the base, vetted and three hours after I saw the girl on the ground (who'd lost the horse in the morning)this girl came to speak to me, saying thanks for stopping..I asked if the horse was OK, No she said we have not found him..yet..and she explained about the pals horse was missing too...This was Saturday..they were still missing on Sunday, and still not found on Monday afternoon, still got all there tack on and everyone has search high and low....eventually before it got dark they called in the police helicopter to help.. they found them in a thicket, eating there way through the undergrowth...safe and sound.

Hope this horse turns up.
Sue & Rozy.
