For the first time ever, I'm leaving my horses out tonight. It's too hot here by day and I thought... well other horses are ok with it. All should be well shouldn't it? They're horses for christ's sake! Why on earth am I so worried?

I honestly think we humanize them and think that a deep bed of golden straw and hay nets and water buckets in a beautiful stable is better........ I know I always thought so and am guilty of that, but you are so right, horses that live out 24/7 seem to be much healthier and happy and there seems to be less cases of colic and respiratory problems with the horses that live out, the down side is they always look scruffy well mine do as she is grey and rolls in the mud and dust as soon as I turn her out after a bath and even the others love to roll in the dust or mud and they look so beautiful after a groom or bath and then seconds later they are back to how they looked before but thats how they want to look, its just us and how we want them to look it took me a long time to get used to them living out and it still annoys me if I am honest, but I know they are healthier and happier

My live out 24/7 for the whole year. Milly, now a very healthy 25 year old, has lived out all her life except when she had foals when I brought them in at night for 6 weeks for handling. Anna, who I believe lived in quite alot before I had her has blossomed and is so very happy. It is, of course, natural for them.

I think I'll be happier when they're in the paddock with the trees for shelter - had to move them out for the moment as they were eating my cherries!

never thought I would say it but my seem to have bloomed living out too

Mine are out now too and loving it Had to wait for the lush grass to die off a bit before i could turn them out 24/7, this year seems like the flushes of spring grass have run and run...love seeing them out though

You are funny...........says me, we went to the local fete last night in our village as its frowned upon if you don't go, by fete I mean the mairie puts on a meal and wine and firework display for his village, all free, anyway we went and it was lovely met some really lovely people, but anyway, as soon as the fireworks started I panicked and sent my hubbie home to check on the horses as was worried sick, he came back and announced they were all asleep and not bothered about the fireworks at all silly me

Black clouds and rain so they're in tonight. Try again tomorrow!
basbob Posted - 19 Jun 2009 : 5:17:07 PM
Well I have found out that 3 posts have been knocked down so maybe they were grazing SW France last night! Still if they were they were back by morning.
Have to check weather for tonight as my OH thinks that if it rains they might be miserable. I so hope I can keep them out though but this time I'll put the electric fence on! Didn't want to do it last night, just in case. I'm so pathetic!
Gerri Posted - 19 Jun 2009 : 09:09:30 AM
Well Done I told you they would be fine I bet they loved it although I bet you were having a break down, just like I did the first time
angelarab Posted - 19 Jun 2009 : 08:24:51 AM
i was so neurotic the first time mine stayed out, i think the worst thing that happened was the older horses told him ghosty stories..LOL my non horsey husband is great, with comments like Zebra live out and god made horses waterproof!

Are they having another night tonight?
