Yesterday evening I heard squeeking and to my horror found our cat with a fledgling Woodpecker!
Dad rescued it from said evil cat and after checking him quickly (didn't want to frighten him more) for any injuries, we put him in an ice cream tub filled with shredded paper (thinking it would keep him warm overnight after the shock) and into the green house, where he could get out but no predators could get in.
This morning, sadly, he had passed away! So RIP little Woodpecker! We tried our best but I think the shock was too much for him! Poor little mite!

Ha ha, reminds me of a scene from Terry Pratchett's 'the wee free men' where one dresses up as a 'little birdie' and gets the cat to try to catch it - then nuts it in the 'heid'!
Brilliant book
Maybe we should try something similar? |

I know what you mean, I was upset for ages after the 'blackbird' incident and couldn't even look at my dog in the same light for a couple of days, but it is just their instinct kicking in.
I remember our last yard cat catching a baby bird and eating it even though he had hardly a tooth in his head and was very well fed. |

Forgot to say, he NEVER gets any treats - doesn't like them! He will only eact cat food, prefers biscuits to meat and at the moment is hardly eating anything!!!
If you put a tasty it of chicken in front of him, he turns his nose up! Has to be caught fresh, little deamon! |

I feel soo bad about it - he really was the prettiest little thing!!! Thankfully we seem to have quite a few Woodpeckers around us - can always hear a couple pecking away!
We have a pair of Kestrels (I think that's what they are) at the Farm - they perch on top of the school lights and then swoop down to catch their prey! We also have an abundance of Green Parakeets - they sqwack their heads off for hours, wouldn't mind a few less of them!
If you're at the farm at Dusk you can also hear owls tooting away and nearly get your head knocked off by bats... lovely place to live  |

I know exactly how you feel, my naughty dog killed a couple of baby Blackbirds last year right in front of me and there was nothing I could do to stop her.
I know this doesn't make it any better, but we were talking to the guy on the RSPB stand at Bath and West and he told us that Woodpeckers are on the increase and on their green list meaning that they are actually quite common and not under threat at present, whereas birds who were once very common like the Song Thrush are on the red endangered list
Although our yard cat is a keen hunter she only seems to go for rodents and rabbits (touch wood), she did jump on a pheasant last year, but couldn't hold it down

So sad.....Woodpeckers, such a rarely seen bird of recent years. Bad, bad cat!!! No cream for you for a while!!
Domestic cats are so cruel and do torture their unfortunate `catch`
and as we so appreciate the swallows, blue tits even the humble hedge sparrow, who nest each year in our stables and nesting boxes, we do not have cats. The JR`s are brilliant ratters and would not tolerate a cat on their territory!!

aw, poor woody (gosh that takes me back away...)
You could try feeding him?
sorry, couldn't resist. we had a special collar that beeped when she moved too fast. Seemed to work, no bloody messes on our carpet in the mornings - but it did drive us mad and we had to take if off in the evenings when she was around us - then put it back on before we went to bed!
way back in the dim and distant past my cat then used to bring them into my bedroom (bungalow in south africa) and CRUNCH them up; I'd find the skull in the morning!  |

He really is a serial killer! Think it's because he spent the first couple of years of his life fending for himself (we took him in after he arrived at the stables). He killed our Squirrel, reguarly gets birds, mice, frogs and even a baby Rabbit, which thankfully was successfully rescued from him!
He wears a bell but i'm not sure what more we can do really? |

Thank God my cat doesn't bother with birds, it would upset me so much. |
