Another accident at my yard, i think im cursed!
Wed afternoon on my afternoon off, the yard owner was having a jumping lesson on his affiliated horse, we heard shouting by the school so i ran around to see the horse the wrong side of a 4ft gate and Lee the YO on the gravel floor.
They were doing a turning excerise after a 2'9 jump and the horse and rider got confused horse went to go left and Lee wanted to go right so ended up straightening the horse up. Bless the horse his only 5 and honest thought lee wanted to jump the gate so he tried.
Horse got stuck on the gate and threw lee luckily past him.

I ran over and asked lee n instrucor should i ring 999 but lee said he would be ok and wanted to get up.
5 mins after the accident and i hosed the poor horses leg off as he took the skin off his knee and above (luckily only grazes) Lee looked very pale so i rang 999 , he was complaining of major lower back and pelvis pain felt sick and faint. Air ambulance came before we could catch horses but ground floor 999 took him in ambulance.

He had all xrays which doctors said were clear, and took him for CT scan which sadly showed he haf fractured 3supporting arms off the vertabra which i think hold the muscles etc in place. and worse got big blood clot where the breaks are!

All i can keep thinking is what if i called them straight away and not let him move would the damage be as bad. Lee is still in bad way in hopsital not being allowed to move and now NIL by mouth

I think im going to get my self on a first aid course fast with my bad luck
Im now trying to be mommy to 6 horses and a mare due to foal soon as well as my own and the livery horses :(

Has anyone else heard of this back injury before

Get better soon Lee x

I think you are doing a great job and sending best wishes to lee and his poor horse x

You did all your could: kept him still until he wanted to move, offered to get help, then did get help, sorted out the horses... what more do you expect of yourself?! But the course will make you feel more confident.

Good job the hospital didn't stop looking for damage when the xrays showed nothing.

Sounds like you did the right thing Precious, you didn't move him and you rang 999. Lee (being a man, bless) probably said he was fine!! But you still got him to hospital.

Everything crossed for Lee - I've seen two broken backs from riding accidents (now fully recovered) and my brother has one at the moment (biking accident) and he is recovering well.

Best of luck in managing the yard x

get well soon lee.

i wouldn't blame yourself, lucky you were there at all. But if does make you feel better you could do the course, and know in the future that you know what you are doing

Oh poor chap, what a horrific accident. Sounds like you acted most appropriately so don't feel guilty - it was lucky you were there and kept your head.

Get well soon Lee.

Yikes! That sounded horrific for all involved! Accidents like that happen in a nano second, and it's good that you were there to assist! Glad to hear the young horse wasn't seriously injured too!
