I am looking for someone to help me with my lap-top which has stopped working and shows an Isass.exe error. It was working fine until after windows did 18 updates at the weekend

I have gone into F8 on start-up and done the last working good configuration amd also tried safe mode, none work, I still get the error message.... I don't get a log-in screen, when I switch my lap-top on it has a white screen with acer on it, then it flips to a black screen with the windows logo, it then goes black and goes to a blue acer screen showing this error message that the application has failed to initialize (0xc000000?)

Help......!!

I use Acronis True Image and find it quite good. Has kept me free from trouble 3 or 4 times. It's particularly recommended if you have an external disk to backup to, but can be used even if you have a single disk.
angel2002 Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 12:09:43 PM
Will look into that, don't want to have to go through that lot again

Can you recommend any in particular?
Rui Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 11:56:04 AM
You're welcome, Mandy. I am really glad I could be of help .

If you want to keep safe for the future, maybe consider backup software, to allow you to create an image of your disk. I do it with all my pcs.

Rui Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 11:52:25 AM
With the final steps, you should be able to get your laptop to a very recent state. Surely not the last one, as that was problematic, but a recent one. If it doesn't work, you can try another, just by copying the files from the c:\windows\repair folder and proceeding from there.
angel2002 Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 11:33:46 AM
IGNORE THIS
angel2002 Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 11:08:20 AM
Oh!! Error box has gone and I have my desk top back!!!!!!

Now going to attempt to finish the print out you sent me..

Keep everything crossed!

angel2002 Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 11:00:06 AM
Okay

Now got this message -

Windows cannot find 'C:\Acernb\Install\preload.cmd'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Rui Posted - 27 Oct 2009 : 10:19:36 AM
Try this:

copy C:\windows\repair\system.bak C:\windows\system32\config\system

After that the laptop should reboot.

phew.....I now have RSI!!

Also this is the message I get -

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can sttempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Hope the above means something to you as it means nothing much to me

Rui Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:53:00 PM
If you can find someone with a similar mode, you surely could use their file. Let's see if you find the file there or not...
angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:50:36 PM
I'm sure that a girl I work with has one the same, will ask her
angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:48:12 PM
Will try when I get home

Bet I don't find one!

Laptop is an Acer Aspire 3690 series model no BL50
Rui Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:45:49 PM
dos screen, type cd c:\windows\repair, then type dir. Check whether you have a file named system there.
What brand and model is your laptop? Know anyone else with a similar laptop?
angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:41:20 PM
Didn't look?

Do you mean go into the 'dos' screen and when it comes up with c:windows> type in c:windows\repair?

Out of here at 5pm and no other pc at home so if I don't reply I will tomorrow :)

Rui Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:36:23 PM
Seems you found the source of your recent problem...

If you look inside c:\windows\repair, you can't find a file named system, there?
angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:33:37 PM
Yes and this one before I got to input the 'repair' lines -

delete C:\windows\system32\config\system

Rui Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:27:00 PM
You mean this statement failed: copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system ?

angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 4:12:10 PM
Don't think I explained myself properly

I copied word for word the 1st step only on the print out ie -

md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak

all the way to the bit where I had to do the delete each file and when I did the line that had 'system' in it, it said that the system file could not be found?? As the print out doesn't tell me what to do if you get this message I just carried on to the copy repair bit and again when I entered the line with 'system' in it, it said not found. when I finished I typed exit and got a black screen saying -

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Repair by pressing 'r' in start-up

If I do this it takes me back to the 'dos' screen again so I go round in circles...

Have spent hours looking on the internet at work and nothing seems to work, last resort says to do 'bootfix' and 'bootmfd' but that came up with a caution notice and I wasn't brave enough to continue

Mandy,

Likely the copy failed or the restore point you used was corrupted. I suggest that you try an older one or a new one (not sure which restore point you used).

It may also have happened that you forgot to copy the file in that step (which is the most likely reason). You can just reboot using the disk and copy just the file relative to that step. Copy it from the restore point used to the C:\windows\system32\config\system folder.
angel2002 Posted - 26 Oct 2009 : 2:33:48 PM
Hi Rui,

Just an update for you, everything was going fine until I type 'exit', waited for the system to restart and then got this messgage -

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

And I promise you that I followed that print-off to the letter! I think that I might have a corrupt registry, whatever that is!

Not sure what to do now?? Any ideas

Mandy x

Have printed it off, you are right, seems simple enough to follow...

My profile is up to date, as far as I know, if you need my address just let me know. Email is -

passion-arabians@hotmail.co.uk

I have just PM'd you
Rui Posted - 20 Oct 2009 : 3:48:16 PM
Angel,

I don't think you will bugger up. It's not a hard process and I will even see if I can make it simpler. If you profile is up to date, I will determine the tool to send you and mail you a disc to boot the laptop.

I have pmed you the document. If you have a look, you'll see it's not that hard.
angel2002 Posted - 20 Oct 2009 : 3:37:04 PM
Thanks Rui

I didn't know you were not in the UK

If you could sort out a tool that will boot that would be great, I will pay for your postage etc... Just hope I am smart enough to do this..Worse case is I totally bugger it up and lose everything, I now regret getting my PC to remember various passwords that I didn't keep a note of!!

Rui Posted - 20 Oct 2009 : 3:07:57 PM
Angel,

I have the pdf version of an article that explains how to restore your XP operating system after a situation such as the one you are experiencing now occurs. I will put it online in a webspace of mine and pm you the link to it. It's detailed and simple to follow. There is one major caveat, though - it requires that you are able to boot the computer, at least to a dos prompt window, which you could do if you had the XP disc. Not having it, I will have to find out whether a tool I have used in the past allows you to do that. I have that tool at home and will check it when I get back.
In any case you will have to download something and write it to a disk, which means you may have to have someone helping you or do it in your work computer. If nothing else is available, I can also create such a diskk and sent it, which will take a few more days, as I am not in the UK, as I think you know. I will be glad to do it.

I am pming the pdf document in a few minutes. Let me know whether you can download a tool to boot into a windows console or would like me to send it to you, once i determine what tool is best.
