Over
eighty competitors attended the Endurance GB Westmoor Ride
on Sunday 22nd July. The ride is famously
known throughout
the West Country for its links with Daphne du Maurier’s
Jamaica Inn, which is located next to the venue. The route
explored the beautiful but isolated countryside of East Cornwall
described in the classic novel. The 2007 event hosted its
first Endurance Ride and attracted over fourteen entries
in addition to the popular competitive and pleasure ride
classes. Unfortunately due to the torrential rainfall over
the moor this summer organisers Judy White and Pam Ritchie
were forced to restrict crewing on the course to only one
place. To assist riders, they offered water points on course
at the check-points “We had a lady providing crewing
at CP3 who had no experience of endurance and is usually
involved with show-jumping. She remarked how polite everyone
was and how they all thanked her, which is a credit to our
members” said organiser Pam. The ride “had a
very high success rate although lots of shoes were lost,
which accounted for the high number of retired on course” Pam
went on to explain. “One of our vets said she liked
coming to endurance events because the horses are all in
such good condition which is gratifying.”
In
the 82km ER Lesley Dore and Firebird notched up another
win in quick succession following their win
of the 80km ER
at Minions at the start of July. Lesley from Newton Abbot
completed the course in a respectable 15.33kmph. Unfortunately
Jo Chisholm and her former AHS Marathon winning horse who
were hot on Lesley’s heals were forced to retire on
course after Kahnspur lost a shoe shortly after leaving the
final vetgate. Jill Semmens and her promising new horse Evermore
Exciting moved up into second place, which allowed Chair
of the South West Branch Mrs Annie Joppe to take third place.
