Ward has never hidden just how highly she regards Arsene Rupin,
whatever he did as a three year old
was always going to
be a bonus to his four year old campaign. Last season he scored
at Southwell on his debut before running a highly encouraging
fifth in the Group 1 Abu Dhabi Juvenile Championship at Newmarket.
At Brighton on only his third start and his seasonal debut as
a four year old Arsene Rupin (Dormane x Djelsomina) came of age
with a devastating turn of foot to repel by an easy two lengths
multiple Group winner Dormah De Brugere (Dormane x Ballade Folle),
with last years winner Shahngali (Bengali D’Albret x Affecshahn
(Derbist)) a further three-quarters of length back in third to
land the Group 3 event over seven furlongs at odds of 12/1 (selected
in this column as a live each way shot). Eau Royal the 4-5 Fav
(last years Group 1 Dubai Stakes winner) was caught flat footed
and could only finish fifth but remains on course for the Coupe
Du Europe at Chantilly on 4th June. Arsene Rupin now heads for
the Derby where the step up in trip is sure to suit.
