Hi,
Thought I would sporadically put up on the forum an update on how my training is going for the Comrades Marathon (56 miles in under 12hrs) which I am doing to raise funds for the GB team to go to Kentucky and the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.
Training has been going well, although has needed a bit of imagination as to where I have been able to run with all the snow and ice we have had in January. My mileage is increasing quite considerably and am doing a lot of 'back to back' runs i.e. a long run on saturday and sunday. I had entered the Gloucester marathon on the 24th Jan as part of my training, but was quite worried as to how I would cope as had not tapered as would normally do, and had done a 10 mile run the day before. The day dawned very cold but sunny. I was surprised at how good I felt. The course was run over three laps, quite hilly in parts, and I felt good even on the third lap and managed to overtake quite a few runners. I purposely hadn't taken a GPS with me as the aim was to run it comfortably and not go for a time, so was pleased to finish in 4hr 26 just 13min short of my PB.
Had 3 days off from running before the training kicks in again. Did hill repeats on Thursday, did them too hard and really suffered the next day, so I have not done my 2hr run today, but hopefully will get out to do my 3 1/2 hr run tomorrow.
Still got to fit in training the horses, and although I would love to sit by a nice warm fire after these long runs I need to get out and ride my horse that I am aiming for the 160k at Haywood Oaks (that is if we will ever get rid of this snow - had a bit more this morning!!!). Have the first Senior squad assessment weekend next weekend, which will mean that I won't be able to fit in my long runs, so will have to do them during the week - 2hr wed and 3 3/4hr thur. So when anyone sees me please don't tell me I look tired because i probably am! ;) ;D

I don't know how you do it Tricia! But all the best - hope training continues more 'to plan' once the white stuff has gone, and that the horses are all behaving. (I bet Evaie is chuckling to her pregnant self as she watches you run up the lane!) |

This last weekend I completed my first Ultra marathon as part of my training for the Comrades marathon. On Saturday I ran the London Ultra 50k race, this took place going round the Capital Ring starting in Streatham and finishing in Wembley. As I have never run over a marathon distance before it was very much entering the unknown - I was pleased to finish in 5hr 44 min having got lost a few times as the marking was a bit erratic in places. Being quite competitive I was very pleased to finish 115th out of 188 starters only 53 were under 5hrs. And was 15th out of 35 women taking part! It was very similiar to doing an endurance ride. We had aid stations every 10k which offered water to drink and food. Having done a few 160k ERs, I treated it the same. I ran from aid station to aid station, not thinking about the overall distance and that kept my moral up quite high. My legs ached that night, however today I have ridden out for a couple of hours and walked the dogs for another hour, but quite relieved that I have a few days off from running to give myself time to recover before getting back into the long runs again. If you are able to sponsor me in aid of our team going to Kentucky please go to the fundraising pages on the main EGB website and you can sponsor on line. Every little penny counts and we are all trying to raise as much money as possible to make sure that our best team is selected to represent us in Kentucky. Thank you. Tricia |

Well done Tricia, I was thinking about you at the week end, it was so cold. I really don't know how you've managed to keep going with the training throughout the last few weeks with the weather as it's been and having horses to see to and get fit as well. It is all credit to you that you have not only kept going but running the distance and feeling good afterwards, absolutely amazing. I do hope you manage to raise a large amount of money, if we can get a good team to Kentucky and do well, you will certainly have made a huge effort to help that happen. |
