Hi all, can anyone recommend a supplement / treatment for Arthritis, preferably a natural product? I've retired my mare due to arthritis as am not happy to give her bute just to ride her (she's fine in the field) but was wandering if there is a product I could give her to see if she improved enough to take out on small hacks, or even inhand as she loves getting out & about, she's only 21!

Feedmark's Zerobute has worked well for my old mare and I like the information from this company - you know exactly what is in their products and I have found their customer service excellent.

Last time the back lady came she raved about Equine Answers Premierflex Plus, it's a joint supplement with Devil's Claw added. She'd seen a big improvement in a horse she treated that hadn't been moving well for a long time, and that was the only thing the owner had changed. She then tried it on one of her own horses that she's been having problems with, and saw improvement there as well. Apparently the ingredients are in higher concentrations than in a lot of joint supplements, and it works out pretty economical as well.

Cosequin in his feed and a copper bangle on the arthritic Leg in question seems to have sorted my older boy out.

Our 21 year old boy has really been helped by Feedmark's Zerobute and their Extraflex HA. It is very noticeable if he stops getting it (trial period to see whether it really was making a difference a year after starting him on it) - once he was back on it he was very full of himself, chasing the others around the field etc. He still hacks out regularly and does the odd 10 mile ride, which he certainly wouldn't be able to do comfortably without these supplements.

Edited to add

He also gets micronised linseed

When I had the issue I looked at all the products and what was in each, how much, and the value of each, and so on ..... (spreadsheet lol); PremierFlex came out the best, I used it and it worked well.

I thought quiet hacks, small and often, was good for Arthritis.

You're right Pop, on our vet's advice our older retired girl isn't stabled at night - her stable door is open and she gets the run of the stable yard at night so that she doesn't stiffen up. We don't hack her any more because she now has a very dipped back, but she loves to be taken out for walks in hand.

I'm interested in this thread; since Roger injured his knee in August (now known to be a fragment of.bone in the knee that a second opinion in Newmarket said would be virtually impossible to find laparoscopically) he has been on Glucosamine. I have finished the tub and now put him on 10mg Supplease Gold daily and he is sound (possibly only 99.5% sound at an extended trot) and he is not on Bute.

However, follow up X-rays have shown some arthritic changes, which is a bit of a bugger, so we'll see how he goes with regard to needing anti-inflamatories.

Vet has suggested considering something called iRAP which is nade from the horse's own blood and injected into the joint (about £1000 a time - eek) but the only review I've read said it shouldn't be used in a joint with bone fragments.

At the moment I want to manage as conservatively as possible - saving the "big guns" for when he needs it.........but all opinions are welcome, please!
