I wasn't going to post this but my experience might help others.
My beautiful Mare Fanny was PTS on Saturday during a most terrible foaling. We bought Fanny from the Gucci sale as a two year old and promised her she would never leave us. She was funny, naughty and gave us a wonderful succession of foals including the one she died for at the weekend. Fanny was 10 days overdue and came in from the field after a sunny day of rolling in the mud and enjoying life. She had not much udder and no wax. I was in the house tidying up and had the CCTV on. I heard her waters go. When I got outside a sliver of bag was hanging from her and she didn't start to strain which made me realise this is wrong. My vet came in under 10 minutes, another followed quickly. The two of them tried so very hard to put right a foal which had not entered the birth canal and was twisted in every way. In all of this Fanny stood and let them try to help her. She started to bleed and had received masses of painkillers and sedatives. The decision to pts was made which I can't quite remember. I know my mouth went so dry nothing came out to reply to the vets. I wont go into the terrible gruesome details but the vets had a 4 minute window to cut the foal out which they did. I went in the house at that point and stopped functioning. I couldn't talk. When the vets called me out to the stable a heap of red moved and my foal was alive. I had to milk off from a dead mare (a 5 hour window)which at that point was so unbearable I think I screamed with crying while trying. My hands where numb and my vet took over. Through tears and hell we got some colostrum from the mare and baby had a drink. We cleaned her up and put a blanket on her and set about the phoning round for colostrum from other studs and the foaling bank. We are still on the emergency list for a foster mare but this time of the year it is not hopeful. We have a big stud nearby and they gave us colostrum and mares milk powder and frozen Plasma which was transferred on Sunday into the foal. The hunt have been so helpful and cleared up so quickly I am in their debt. Please don't let this worry you, we have been breeding for over 30 years and this is our first major problem birth. The more good ones you see the sooner you know when they are going wrong, trust me you just know. Everyone please get powdered colostrum in and some mares milk powder before you start foaling. This is our first year we haven't had frozen colostrum in our freezer. We intended on taking some from this mare that died.
G.Fantastica gave us 'Fantasika' a filly owned by Sara Warne and Pete Wainwright. She won at BACS under saddle and qualified at HOYS , she has been Champion in hand many times. She gave us Fantasist, a gelding now who is owned by Barbara Matthews and he won the futurity as a 3 year old and I think is being produced under saddle this year by Kirsty Brown for Barbara. She also gave us Fahima who won inhand and went of to start a stud for her new owner. She gave us Fredorik, a now stallion for Kim and Kelvin. Fred has won much in hand and is a stunner. He stands at Silverdale stud I understand. She gave us Fayth who Anne Harris owns and she has won much inhand and is a real super star. Bless you Fanny we loved you so much even when you died you gave us a filly, who we will cherish for all days.
We borrowed a pet lamb to keep her company. Both are doing well.
Sorry for the long post, writing it all down has helped me and I now know why people come on here and post when they have lost a friend. Our mare was our friend. This experience will take ages to get over and I apologise to all for being so emotional when you talk to me, but thats me. Thanks to everyone who knew and sent me such kind messages they all helped. Our little filly is called Blondie and the Lamb is called Syd. I will try to get some more positve pics once we all feel a bit brighter.

Sue, like many others im sure, im literally in tears reading this. Such a sad story, but i really believe that our friends from the animal kingdom will be waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge. It must have been so difficult for you to write this post, but writing is a great way to express yourself, and release your inner feelings.
You really have a cracking little filly from Fanny, and as said she will live on through her.
Im sending you lots of love and healing vibes, and remember she will wait for you at Rainbow Bridge xxx |

Hi Sue - what a terrible experience and my sincere condolances for you loss. Your own quick actions made it possible to save the foal so there is a little silver lining which may not seem like it at present but will mean more in due course. Sally |
