Any ideas on the weight for an arab? I must admit I'm a lurker more than a poster on the forum, but I've seen an arab for sale that I would love to give a home to and do a bit of hacking. I haven't ridden my arab for 4yrs now since she retired, but sadly I'm a lot fatter and older. Maybe I should consider an instead!

Arabs have much denser bone than other breeds and can carry weight! After all in the desert they were ridden by men, not women, and were max 14.2hh. There are plenty of Arabs that carry men of 6ft and over in endurance as well as other disciplines. |

Arabs are amazing weight carriers for their size. A rule of thumb is 20% of the horse's body weight max. Having said that my husband just came in from riding (interval training)his beloved Sealy... (a just about 15hh, if that, Crabbet mare, certainly not particularly chunky ) grinning and announcing how ''awesome'' she is ...he is 13stone 5'11'' and she has carried him 5,000 miles from Wales to Jordan and is in her 4th endurance season with him and has just gone advanced. I think riding in a sympathetic and balanced way has AT LEAST as much effect as whatever the scales might tell you. Cheers Lisa |

My boy is 14.2hh and i weigh 11 stone . I'm always worried i'm too heavy for him and am constantly on a diet. I loose a few pounds and then put them back on again....
As he is young (4 yrs) i ride every other day and no more than an hour light hacking. (Walk and trot only). As he gets fitter and stronger i'll gradually increase the work. I hope to do some long distance rides on him next year so we both need to get fit for that.
Lisa - i've just realised who you are...! I read your story on the Internet of you and your husbands journey from Wales to Jordan. I was totally hooked on it and couldn't wait for the next day so i could see more pictures and hear about your adventures. Well done to you both for such an amazing journey and thank you for sharing it. |

My mare 14.3, very chunky happily carries OH who is 13 stone.
As Lisa says, if the rider is balanced and doesn't 'plonk' down in the saddle continusously, the weight is less of an issue. |

I'm not admitting to my weight! But my well built Arabs seem to carry me with no problems - I think a finely built one might be a bit different (however I've not tried and may be wrong) but certainly mine are deep bodied, have reasonable bone and are compact so are the ideal shape for me!!

My husband is a tall 6'1" and weighs 12 and half stone and our arab mare carried him happily and we thought she was about 15.1 so shocked to learn she was a touch under 14.3hh. |

Wll, maybe there's hope for me yet. I weigh about 12 stone. Diet time. The girlie that took my eye was the 15yr old on the sales list. She's sold now anyway, so dilemma over!! |

Hey, a friend has an arab, and he weights about 13 stone, his arab is small only 14 something he carrys 13 staone with out a problem. Over jumps and everything. People forget that they are able to carry fully grown men on desert sand. That makes me feel much better! Hope u get on ok. |

Can I just mention density of bone too. Its not just the circumference of bone with legs, etc, but Arabs have much denser and therefore stronger bones than other breeds, so are able to take larger weights (obviously always taking into consideration the individual horse).
Best regards, Mary |

Yes Jasjmm - Arabs are unique - another factor is that most of them have one less rib than other breeds which makes them more compact; less suspension in the middle = better weight carriers |

And less cartilage in the tail, hence tail carriage, and largest brain of any breed of horse!! (Explains a lot..!) :) |
