How disgusting. Why would anyone want to make horses suffer in this way. Are they barbaric or what??? Beyond belief.

Makes no difference whether these horses are arabs, tb's, cobs or moose, its disgusting to let any animal become in this condition, I have been to malaysia and have relatives there, I havent seen it nor have they, but I don't doubt it exists, unfortunatley cruelty exists everywhere. |

Please scroll down and read this forum.....but be warned there are some very sad pics on there, there is also a list of horses on there and the name of the agent who assisted in the importing. Apparenlty these horses are proven endurance horses that were imported to Malaysia from Australia. They also have horses that work the beaches........ Is there anything we can do? Does anyone here have access to reporters or journalists? Maybe we should all e.mail the details to SKY Sports and other sport channels in view of the World Equestrian Games due to be held over there next year!!!!! http://www.cyberhorse.com.au/dcforum/equestrian/44624.html

Somehow managed to miss this up till now. The first reaction is to feel powerless, but there must be something we can do, and the more of us who do it the better. Lynda's writing to the Malaysian tourist board is a good one---please let's all do that. Also WSPA, who are usually pretty useless, but worth a try, and the source of these horses in Australia.
Surely someone here has journalist contacts to get this a high profile????? Unbelievable that the World Equestrian Games will be held here, but with the right coverage that could actually work in favour of stopping this---they should be shamed into cleaning up their act before the equestrian spotlight of the world is on them. |

I have posted a thread on the Horse and Hound Forum and also emailed the magazine with all the information and asked if they could highlight the plight of these poor horses. |

I had this reply today from FEI.......
Dear Ms. Williams, Thank you very much for drawing my attention to these welfare cases that have also been circulated on Endurance sites in the northern Hemisphere. I am well aware of equine welfare cases affecting sports horses of all disciplines in numerous countries around the globe. For many years I have had the opportunity to collaborate with organisations such as the International League for the Protection of Horses and the Brooke Animal Hospital in an effort to improve standards of equine care and husbandry wherever possible. In most places the encouragement of international equestrian sports to the highest standards and adhering strictly to FEI Rules and Regulations has had a beneficial trickledown effect to the local grass roots. Therefore, despite this sometimes being a slow and frustrating process, I hope that by encouraging international equestrian events, not only Endurance, such very sad cases can eventually be eliminated. To the best of my knowledge these cases are being brought to the attention of leading personalities in the international equestrian community in the hope that ways can be found to enable the rehabilitation of any remaining horses kept in similar circumstances at this location. Regards, Fred Barrelet
