Just caught the tail-end of a programme on Polish Arabians on Horse and Country TV (Sky channel 279 - "Horse Babies") Think they might be repeating it at 7.00pm.

Would love to hear about people's polish arabs and what you think are so special about them.

Oh, I must record that - thank you for the info! I do endurance on an 11yo 15.3 grey pure Polish Arab, sired by Halsdon Arabians' Piechur. Piecki is a big-built powerhouse, strong-willed, hardy, full of character, sweet-tempered (mostly). His stable name is Poco which (according to an online dictionary) is Polish for 'what for?' as that seemed to sum his attitude up when I backed him.

I'm not sure if what makes him special to me is anything to do with him being Polish - it'll be interesting to see what others have to say about their Polish Arabs.

I think the attributes of the Polish Arabian are firstly elegance, power, beauty and (it seems) size.

My boy is - I am told - 75% Polish, 15% Russian and he is the most comfortable, balanced ride I've ever had.

He's also very elegant. I think there is something slightly different about a Polish head. I can always pick them out at shows. They have a slightly narrower and possibly very slightly longer head/face than some other Arabs and perhaps a bit more slender towards the muzzle.

At the time I bought mine, I was also given a catalogue for the Polish state stud sale and the horses in there are just fantastic. I would have another Polish any day.

I was told though, that the Polish studs bred them prolifically and that there was a lot of 'wasteage' in that only a fraction were as good as they wanted.

Most are/were raced to prove performance before being bred from which I think is a good plan.

My boy is G Lanzelot, (Andrus x Lalique) and he too is 15.3hh. Heavily fleabitten and he still takes my breath away every time I go to the field and see him. He is very bonded and speaks to me long and loud while feeds are being prepared. He also speaks to me vocally whenever I approach him for anything. I adore him.

The Polish arab is tough, performance bred, correct and pretty!

My boy Wiper is pure polish, he is all these things and a sweety with it. I also have a pure polish daughter and son of his out of a Fawor mare and they are fab too!

Most of my other arab have polish lines too! I love em!!!

Interesting you should say 'size' Roseanne, as the first imports here from Poland were nearly all small horses. I got in trouble with the Theobalds for thinking their Polish/Nuhra stallion Zehros was a Sec B (he was about 13.3h!) In fact, the Theobalds/Michael Harris Polish horses are well known for being petite and delicate - Holly Blue being a perfect example.

Bask was also a small horse - I remember seeing a group of his offspring at Scottsdale and being stunned by how little they were, compared to the typical OEng Arab!

Lomond (Lotny x Love-in-the-Mist)is the love of my life I used to compete in endurance with him and he always gave me 110% Very handsome, powerful, loyal and a REAL character!
He's the grey I'm riding in my signature piccies (not my Avatar...that's my grey PBA "Just Silver")

My girl Cinnabar Moth is Polish, (Hawkmoth x Kamono) though a little pocket rocket at 14h - she is a Michael Harris bred horse.

She has just gone to open level endurance so has good athleticism - but for me the qualities I love are her gentleness, amazing beauty, delicate, yet as hard as nails and everything about her.

Hoping that one day (when we get some land) I'll eventually breed one foal from her and tempted to find her a Polish stallion, though there seem to be a lot less of them around than other types and need it to be suitable to sire an endurance foal - but would like a foal for keeps, that's more of the same!

The first pic I saw of her with her last foal (pic courtesy of Cotswold Arabian)

Thank you Zenitha. I am biased but he's all I could have wished for. I'm going to practice the

From the Polish Arabs that were in this country at the time I got Lance (11 years ago) I thought they were small too, but it seems lots of Arabs are growing up very big. Perhaps it's a general thing, not just a Polish thing?

I'm interested to know how you can calculate how much a horse is Polish or Russian or Straight Egyptian for example. The Crabbet calculation is somehow easier...

I have a Polish stallion called Piatza. Allaskar ex Pilonia.

He again is a big powerful horse with a beautiful head and fabulous movement. He too is the most wonderful ridden horse I have ever sat on. I love him to bits.

Any photos Steph? I did see him at HOYS (lovely boy). I looked in my Flikr account thinking I had a photo of Piatza, but only have a picture of Harri! If you have one, send it to me at roseanne_edwards@journalist.com and I'll put it up for you on this thread. I know everyone'd love to see him...

You are right about the head Roseanne .
About 10 years ago I noted they were not as round in the jowl and the eye position seemed a trifle high at times .
The breeders have made a lot of outcrosses to rectify some points and now they are unbeatable again .
They have been breeding Arabs a very long time and keep tapping into what appears to be genes from the Nejd with the fairytale mares we keep seeing .Fascinating.

I think my gelding has some polish in his breeding, like you Roseanne I would be really interested if someone could work out what percentage or explain how to do it, he is Roe Arabi (Balenina x Om El Mareikh and he is the easiest sweetest horse I have ever known, his about 15.1 and is still filling out his only 5, he is a very comfortable ride and I love him dearly. I have been looking out for the horse babies programme as it has been mentioned on here before, hope they repeat it again.

We have a barn full of them! Love them...sturdy AND pretty, although take longer to 'dry out'.

Our home-bred stock includes 3 Kordelas offspring (full siblings), 2 Pilot offspring, 1 Eldon grandson, 1 Expo daughter and 1 Ferryt daughter. Our foundation stock are Algonkwin (Bask) daughters.

I am sorry that I missed that programme, please would someone mind letting me know when and if it is repeated. Thanks.

I'd love to see the film too but don't have Sky...

I'd love to see anyone else's photos - please.

Pinkyboots wait for it, cos Lance grew about two inches from 5 - 8 years old. I don't think he stopped growing until 9!

I watched it, it was great Kordelas was lovely but Ecaho was AWESOME ! What an incredible horse

Four of my horses are related to the lovely Banat - one granddaughter, two great grandsons (otherwise unrelated) and a great granddaughter. All four have good legs, plenty of bone, and really lovely movement.

The polish do indeed seem to have perfected the art of breeding the most incredible mares

Seconding Lisa Rachel---Lance looks lovely!
My gelding, Eisor Zaharoff, is half Polish---his sire was Zaracz. His dam's ( Nikkita) side is mainly Crabbet. I would say Roseanne's description fits Zaharoff too---he is tall ( just over 15.3hh) and elegant, but still with a lot of substance.
He is very beautiful ( yes, I am biased!!) but to me the nicest thing about him is his personality. He is a real people horse ---very kind and intelligent.

Mind you, my only other purebred, Zanthar, had a great personality as well and he was mainly Crabbet ( Vain Hussar x Mirzah). Arabs are just great horses and I'm not sure that we should dwell too much on dividing them into different "types".

Love this thread! Lance looks amazing in the pics Roseanne, what a majestic horse, and your description of his talking habits made me smile! Kuzira is so similar in that she 'chats' for England too and holds little conversations when she sees me about the place, has quite a vocabulary and lets me know her opinion about things in no uncertain terms. Such wonderful, loyal companions. Very privileged to own one! And the ride ofcourse is magic...

My previous stallion was mostly Polish approximately 3/4. Jaffa (AH Walkyria Bhaltos (R Ali Bey x Walkyria El Jamaal) a full brother to AH Walmir ,is a very elegant little chap who was also very very vocal. Not big, being about 14.2/14.2 hh and called by one vet "isn't he dinky". Very athletic, fast and always spoke, greeted me in the morning, told us when a stranger was around. If he saw me come out of the house he called to me and would come belting over. Always spoke to his mares. Brilliant little chap now gelded and owned by Sue Pattinson.

Roseanne its funny you should say that my friend said to me she thought he looked taller she hadn't seen him for a while, he is filling out all the time though, he looks so much better now compared to when we bought him he was such a weedy little two year old, I love your Lance by the way.
