I have an extremely hormonal mare at this time of year. So much so I was kicked out my last livery yard as the yo couldnt control her. Its been an issue since she had her foal 10 years ago. I had to wean him early for safety sake cos of her strange behaviour with her hormones.
She becomes very clingy to a 'chosen' horse and youd think she was suicidal when the 'chosen' one leaves her. This can be a mare or gelding. Shel flatten you in the stable. Doesnt stop shouting to the point she loses her voice and leading her can be quite dangerous. She also viciously attacks other horses that even looks at the at the chosen one. Still fine when shes ridden tho.
First season is the worst, then by end of July she is normal again.
It was at this time last year I tried regumate. It cost a fortune and didnt make much difference at all.
this year I started giving her Oestress at start of Jan. Well Im very pleased to say, she has had 2 season so far and not a hint of problems!!
First one I only noticed cos she had a sticky tail.
So I just thought Id share this with you, that this Oestress really does work!! I know not every mare is the same but if it can make this big a difference with my girl I will be soon shouting its recommendations from the rooftops.
This year I plan to not have any sleepless nights with worry. Im just so chuffed!

That's really good news. It obviously isn't her temperament it's her hormones. Glad you've found something that works and thanks for the reccomendation.

Thats really interesting as I as discussing this with a friend today. Her mare is a tad hormonal & stressy, and has been on Regumate for a month with some success. The only drawback was the cost, so I'll mention Oestress to her...worth a shot! I've always found this brand of suppliments to be worth the money

Oh I have been in tears over her behaviour countless times over the last few years. It wasnt so bad when I lived on a farm and had them out the back door. It was only my horses that were affected but Ive been in livery yards for the last 4 years and its been awful. Sometimes the chosen horse is another livery so it becomes an impossible situation. They cant take their horse out the field without mine and its not a safe thing to do on your own.
At the moment shes turned out with my youngster and 2 other geldings that she takes no interest in. So the real test will be when they are out 24/7 in may. This year the mares and gelding are getting separated. As things are just now, I think shel be a bit unsettled for a couple of days and then calm down, so fingers crossed.
Ill keep everyone updated on progress.
Claire I would def recommend it. I found with regumate that she was fine when she was on it and then the season shed have at the end of the dosage was horrendous. I decided just to use it til I weaned a liveries gelding off her. We had to do this like we were weaning a mare and foal, lol.

Oestress is excellent and really cheap compared to regumate.
