Baz is testing me, I think he has realised he is a big boy now and yes he can drag me off.
Last night took him into school to try a bit of lunge walk/trot both reins, he has gone from being yes i want to listen and learn to Get stuffed Bounce Bounce i am dragging you over here.
So i stopped lunging and just tried to walk him round the school in a nice walk...Get stuffed don't like that spin drag we are going this way..
I put him back on the track walked a few paces, stand ...good boy walk on...stand good boy..etc my aim was to get him to stop dragging me off when he wants...
I think those who know Baz will know he is testing me but i don't know what to do. Plan tonight is to just go in the school and walk around nicely changing the rein then out again with lots of praise..

Pen yourself a small area - even poles on the ground will make him think twice so when he 'goes' you can give a NO aid - if he ignores let him out as far as the fake 'wall' and he'll check himself and probably feel a bit daft for making a fuss. Also lots of transitions like you are already doing and making him backup - if he walks into a situation like invading your space - its up to him (not you) to step out of it.
And are you lunging on a headcollar? Is he bitted separately? Try a Cavesson until he gets the message. He's old enough (and bright enough) to do short sessions of steady work.
It's hard on a yard with everyone rubbernecking though!

HI, tonight went a little better he was still un focused but i was more confident and vocal!i tend to go quiet when i am worried. we are on the head collar, when you say cavesson do you mean lunge or bridle type, he has settled well to the bit now,  |

| a sliphead for his bit, then a cavesson over the top and use the central ring. I tend to find that after a couple of sessions they know what you are asking and can lunge of a headcollar - cavessons get bulky and warm and you don't want a friendly rub with one of them on - OUCH!! |

Keep persevering and never let him win! Keep a sense of humour and let him know you're not "bovvered" - you'll just keep going until he does what you ask!
Kharidian had just one HORRIBLE month at the age of five - he was a little sod but soon got over it when he realised he'd have to do it anyway....and it was far easier to do as he was asked as I'd never asked him to do anything he was mentally or physically incapable of doing.

All of mine went through a bolshy stage some point. Biggest problem was with my gelding when he was 3 (non Arab). Was made worse by the fact that he was 16.2 and i literally couldn't hang on to him!!
Although dis heartening its just a phase they go through and you will just have to ride it out. Try to stay calm, always wear gloves, be persistent and try to finish on a good note (however small). Before you know it you will both be wondering what the fuss was all about!!

| If you have him on a normal head collar try clipping the lunge line or lead rope to the inside square instead of the ring at the back, if he tries pulling away then hopefully you will be able to have more control over his head, my youngster at the moment is going the other way, she turns in and promptly goes up as if to say what are you going to do now, so we are now back to walking and as soon as she hesitates I put the a carrot stick (a lot more rigid than a whip) to her shoulder so that she cannot come in and tonight it was a lot better, but she will find another way to test me as I suspect your lad will, good luck let us know how you get on |

Is Baz a colt or a gelding? Colts will try it on all the time, you have to be one jump ahead of them as they soon get cheeky. My geldings have always been good but the colts are very different. I always lead with a chain under the chin as they can't get away from you. If he isn't in control on the lunge go back to work on the headcollar and lead rein with a chain. I put the chain through the sides of the headcollar and clip them under the chin, not over the nose.
I have a very large 4 year old colt (not a colt at 4 but never been used at stud) and on a headcollar he knows if he takes off he can get free. Since I have used the chain he is fine. He tried it on a few times and realised he only caused himself discmofort and now leads really well. He does still bounce around sometimes but I am always in control. I lead him out round the village, something I wouldn't dare do without the chain. We also use the leading as a schooling session doing halts, walk backs, etc.

well today i am back to buzzing again, we LONG REINED... think he liked it, we just went round the school walk but we did 20m circles halts walk ons and finished on a fab note, Thanks for all the tips they are working.  |
