I am currently in the process of registering my first pure bred filly Indian Swallow (Indian Banner/Brede Bellissma). I have recieived a letter from AHS stating they have no record of transfer of ownership of my mare Bliss in my name yet I have the AHS cert in my name at home. They also say they have no record of Bliss having been parentage tested or registered as breeding stock therefore could I send them a further cheque on top of the £126 already sent to cover registraion, for £30 trans of ownership fee, £40 for parentage testing, £46 to register Bliss as breeding stock. How can I check that they have not made a mistake on the parentage testing and registering of breeding stock before shelling out another £86. Has anyone else had any experience of this?
Thanks
Maureen

If you have the AHS Reg Cert at home then you could photo copy it and fax it to them. You also need to copy and fax the back portion 'transfer of ownership', your name & address will be on an AHS sticker and the date of transfer
Re; blood type.parentage testing, it should be typed in bold black print on your cert just under the bit where is says 'bred by'
Hope this helps |

Hi Maureen, I too bred my first purebred arab colt "Silvakhira" (Silva Dollar/Scherzo Bint Akhira)this year and was gobsmacked at how much I had to pay to register him. Like you, I had to pay the £86 for the DNA/parentage blood testing kit for my mare because this was her first foal. Also had to pay a £35 vets call out charge to extract said blood from my mare and a further £5.30 to post the sample to Eire!!! Then there's the £75 on top of all that to register the foal which took it up to a grand total of £201.30. But AHS have promised me £200 back for using a Premium stallion Jill |

I must admit I am seriously considering breeding less purebreds and more partbreds, they are only 25 pounds to register, no dna testing, nothing!!! Like you jill it has cost me over two hundred pounds to register just one foal!! And I had seven born this year!!!!!!! Its becoming increasingly too expensive to register foals when it costs sooooo much with each one. And although I'm not in it for the money, it would be nice if I for once at least broke even!!!!!! |

Thanks to you all for your input. Anyone know why there is a need to register a mare as breeding stock as there does not seem to be any qualification requirements?

The whole reasoning behind it seems to stem from disagreements and demands of proof in the past as to the line a mare came from. The DNA testing is relatively new, thus so exspensive, hopefully this will change as time goes on. I have had to have all my horses DNA tested that I brought here from the USA, even though they were already tested over there, surely there should be a central network where the proof of the tests can be verified without the horse having to be tested every single time they change owner?

yeah they should insist on microchipping as well then they can verify by just scanning though would be more cost to owners and breeders who are registering them |

Hi Jill,
Silly question, I was under the impression that you only had to send a hair sample for a DNA test on the mare and the same for the foal. Why did you have to have a vet out for a blood sample?

Hi Mandy! The AHS have reverted back to DNA from blood samples again within the last few months. |

I've just had to DNA my two Russian girls, imported last year. Hair samples were requested this time not blood. But perhaps that's because they were DNA tested in Russia.
When I registered the two foals last year - we took hair samples as well.
Why don't you ring the AHS and ask why - the office are so helpful. |

Hi All, As this was the first ever foal I'd bred, I had no idea as to how much it would cost to register him or indeed the procedure involved. The AHS were very helpful, and explained that the reason I had to get my mare blood typed was because there had been "disputes" in the past regarding parentage. Apparently it was being suggested that some folk were using mares to carry foals then registering the foal with another dam Therefore, the blood has to be taken by your vet, who in turn checks your mares markings etc with her passport in order PROVE that it is her!!! Anyway, I got my £200 cheque from the AHS for using the Premium Scheme - so well chuffed with that and a cracking colt foal to boot!!! Jill |
