Can you help? 2 horses stolen and presumed sold on.... Two horses from Norfolk that cannot be ridden may have been stolen by a loanee near Kings Lynn, and sold on elsewhere in the UK, it is feared. Owner Emma Hitchcox is worried about the whereabouts of the mares, as one is elderly and retired, and the other has the back condition, kissing spines. "I fear they may have been sold on as riding horses, and am desperately worried for their welfare," Emma explains. Emma put the two mares on loan as companions on 3rd October 2008, having posted advertisements in the equestrian press asking for a good loan home for the two horses. The loanee, supposedly 'Clare Carter', requested to take the mares to her home in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, as companions for the cobs she bred, and signed a BHS- designed loan agreement with Emma. However, Emma has since heard nothing from the loanee, whose phone is not taking calls, and upon visiting the address supplied, found no such address existed. The woman collected Emma's horses in a large 4x4 pick-up vehicle registration starting T145 and a green Ifor Williams Trailer. She had a young (pre-school age) son with her. The woman has since been traced as Lara Mortimer, of Magdalen, Kings Lynn, Norfolk/Lincolnshire borders. Mobile number ending in '255'. Her old mobile ended '136'. She has definitely repassported one of the horses as 'Saffron', freezemark 4D1F with the Horse Passport Agency, under the name and address above. It is feared the other has been repassported also, however this is more difficult to trace. It is believed the mares may have been sold on through Melton Mowbray Horse market in October. But this is not confirmed. Horses' details: Lady (Cameo Performance) 15-20 year old, 16hh, bright chestnut mare, with stripe. Has overshot knees, flat feet and mild arthritis, and dislikes walking on stones or hard surfaces.Freezemark 4D1F. Has a grumpy temperament when not wearing a head-collar. Very easy in every way. Has had a hard life. Gwendolyn Bright bay, 16.1hh, unregistered French trotter with French passport, 10 years old, with kissing spines, and some arthritis. Poor conformation and large, unrefined head with a blaze. Two distinct white spots on her back from a hornet sting. Lovely nature - not freeze-marked. Can be tricky to catch. Used to be ridden - was anyones ride. If anyone has any information on the horses, they should contact Emma on 07796 322065 / e.hitchcox@btinternet.com or the police on 0845 456 4567 (crime ref available soon)

Hi. I live in cornwall so nowhere near but ill keep an eye out in case i hear of anything down here.
I hope they are found safely and hopefully the new "owner" will see this. Its sick what some people will do and I hope "clare" gets what she deserves for this.
I hope all ends well.

Hi
The name Lara Mortimer has definately been discussed on here previously. I cant find where using the search facility but perhaps someone else may have some luck. It may even have been in the tracing horses/ bloodlines/ pedigree section although i have a slight memory that it was to do with missing horses like this case. |

Oh God how awful
I'm in Norfolk, her name doesn't ring any bells but will definitely keep an eye out for the horses concerned.
Just Googled her name - seems she's a dealer with several horses for sale at very low prices - dread to thing where they have come from! |

Wasn't this the name of the person who had loaned a grey arab mare which went missing and then was subsequently found. Last year sometime I think |

Sorry, there is nothing I can add to help in the tracing of these 2 horses. I did indeed buy an arab in September at Melton sales who was brought in by the said woman, and who like these two horses had been passported 2 days previously. I got in touch with the Sussex police who were looking for this woman in connection with an arab that had gone missing whilst on loan. The horse I had bought was definitely not the same one as they were looking for a chestnut It is alarming that these horses can be re-passported so very easily, and shows the whole system up for what a complete and utter waste of time and money it is. Sadly it never was about safeguarding people's horses from being stolen, but only about the health and safety of people who eat horsemeat, but it has failed even in that department as there is is nothing to say that re-passported horses have not been on a whole cocktail of drugs that SHOULD bar them from ending up on a dinner plate somewhere. |

In the loaners defence, sometimes its just not possible to check out loanees places and you have to go on your gut feeling, I did when loaning my stallion out and the girl who loaned him from me looked after him even better than i did, which I would have thought impossible, but she did and he came home looking beautiful so it doesn't always follow that if you check the homes that they wll be looked after..........please God lets hope these horses are found safe and well and spare a thought for the owner who is probably putting herself through hell with feelings of guilt |

The loaner is trying everythink possible to find her two non ridden horses. Police, NED, sales, have all been informed the good think is they know where the lady is but she wont tell n e one where she sold the horses. Hopefully the police can make her. The local sale to the horses where the lady rushed 2 passports through, 1 matching the description of one horses the sale place dnt keep records of new owners and old owners . Lots get sold without going through the sale ring. Fingers crossed she finds them!

Posted on horsemart: I've just spoken to Emma Hitchcox (Oscar08) who's been posting in the Stolen/Missing part of the forum in the quest to locate her two much loved mares who went out on "Companion Loan" back in October.
Unfortunately, both mares were sold at Melton Mowbray Sale soon after they left Emma, and from the sale they were taken to an abatoir in Cheshire. Emma is devastated to learn their fate. I can't imagine a worse outcome.
I sincerely hope that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice. How someone could take someone elses' beloved animals and let them go to a fate like that for a few hundred quid is beyond me.
RIP Gwen & Lady

the owner (emma) knows where this person is i dnt know how she has stopped herself going round and hurting her.It just shows what a mess the passport system is and that it allows someone to do this who isnt the legal owner of the horses. surely there is some kind of checks the slaughter houses can do like on NED
