Hi guys. I have been away from the forum for a while now but have had such an awful moment today that I think only ALiners will understand how I feel. My arab, Obi is nearly 22 and is as fit and well as he was at 4 - when I got him as my first horse. The vet came to do the annual checkup today and found that he has lost a tooth sometime since his last teeth check in Oct and another has almost worn away. I know it's a silly thing but I can't stop bursting into tears. This is the first sign of age and it's freaked me out.

Know how you feel Sez,my two are serious antiques now and reminders of their mortality is painful. What l do when it gets me that way is have a good old howl on my horse's shoulder. They are always sympathetic but they look at each other in a particularly patronising way,Jewel ,the older, clearly saying to Sam "See,I told you she should have gone on the HRT." |

Hi Sez, welome back....
I understand how you are feeling. We always seem to think that our horses are immortal and that they are going to live as long as we do. I lost my old mare last year, at the age of 38. She had lost quite a few teeth during her later years. One of them was her front centre tooth and a corner tooth.
I started to panic at this point, thinking that she wouldn't be able to graze and go out with the others. I needn't have worried. She managed just fine grazing. After that I had her teeth checked every 6 months.
Try not to worry, at 22 he still has a lot of years left in him yet.....
Take care |

I had my lovely mare Marsinique pts a few years ago.She was only 22yrs young and looked fabulous but an old back injury had been aggravated when she was 2wks in the hands of the B........S who had stolen her(she slipped her Menesk foal too so l shudder to think what they did to her)Anyway she was in constant discomfort despite the best efforts of the vet and the chiropracter.I don't hold with keeping an animal going on Bute as l'm not convinced it eradicates the pain.I'd only had her a short time-just under 2years as l took her in for a friend who couldn't afford to look after her any more but didn't want to sell her(she visited her at least twice a week and held her for the vet at the end)but she was a stunnimg mare,a joy to have around and is sorely missed. They break your heart bv they are SO worth it.Old Jewel, rescued from the meat factory 9years ago at the age of 17 is getting near the end now,l doubt she could stand another winter. She was utterly bereft when Mars went and she and Sam,the old Connemara x became even closer afterwards.I'm thinking that when it's Jewel's time it would be kindest to let him go too.Rough on me but best for him l think. |

Hi Sarah (knew you couldn't stay away for long!) good to see you back Don't they just know how to put the wind up you? But as owner of Grumpy Ginger Bugger mark 1, you've nothing to worrying about I'm sure Obi is fine. Honeys 30 this year & marching on, her last teeth check resulted in 2 visits due to an ingrowing bit that required some amount of work, but she still chopping happily on haylage & retaining condition. I've had a couple of those 'moments' in the past 6 months, she slipped in the barn & went down with such a thud. I was petrified we would never get her up again, but she regained her composure & eventually got to her feet with only a bald patch to show for it. I burst into tears after she stomped back into her box, full of indignation & proceeded to demand her tea! Obi's made of stern stuff Sarah |

Hi Sarah
Welcome back! I know how you feel. I've just taken my 11 year old Whippet to the vet, who has never had anything wrong with her, and the vet thinks she is diabetic. She has to go for further tests tomorrow. I have had her since she was 9 weeks old and am really tearful as all of a sudden I realise that she is getting old and I can't help thinking of how awful things will be if she is not here. I know I'm being silly but yesterday brought things close to home for me.

Thanks guys. I feel alot better after getting some sleep. At least I know from Honey that longevity runs in the family. Obi has always been treated well and had the best of everything so he should be fit and well for a long time to come. I've been busy in my absence. My partner and I finally got married last year after 13 years together. I bought my first horsebox and The Tank and I did our first season, 180 miles competitive endurance, barefoot and treeless. Claire - will you email me again as I want to ask you something and can't fine your addy. |
