Scared!!! Bit of a long one I’m really scared as I am buying a horse with my heart not my head. Someone I know had recently had a horse off a dealer my mate was bringing the horse on to sell down the line at which point the dealers would then get there £. This pony/horse jumped 4ft 3 in the field when my mate tried it. When we got the horse back to the yard he was lame but he had overreached so we thought it was that. My friend wanted to take the horse back to the dealers due to being lame but I made him give him a couple weeks break from anything to see how he was. The horse was brought back to the yard after 2 weeks break and he was crippled!! Looks like laminitis!! The horrid thing was (I didn’t no) the dealer were collecting him and taking him to Appleby sale at a non-warranted sale Friday were they were going to Bute him to eye balls to get him sound to sell at sale. (nice dealers not) The horse was taken and I was in bits not affording to buy him. Had a phone call the next day (Thursday) saying he can’t go to sale cos he has ripped himself to shreds on the lorry. They had to hose the horse n box down from blood. They were still after silly money for a lame horse. I’ve had to borrow money off people to get enough to buy him and get him back to the yard my other horses are back at. I’ve got so many things going through my head. LAMINITIS will he be that bad he has to be PTS. If that does happen at least I have given him a chance. What state is his legs and face going to be in if there was that much blood. He is being dropped off this afternoon and ill have the vet on stand by. Ive got a heavily bedded stable waiting for him and frog supports. IM SO worried. I did report it to welfare charities but with no joy.

I read you post with some horror. I don't know what to say to you. I wish you luck And hope you can give this horse some happiness without it costing you too much emotionally (and financially). My guess is you could be in for a rough ride. Bless you. |

Chance is nice, I'm getting closer to tracing his last passported owner is Ireland. If anyone on here lives in Killarney let me know as you might be able to help. I thought if i could trace and get a bit of background about him it might help. He apparently came over from Ireland this year being bought at a connemara sale over there. I've got butterflys in my stomach with nerves as Im relying on over people for help as Ive never had a laminitic before but my vet is very good. You hear that many horror stories about it. Have any of you had many success stories. |

Precious sounds like this little horse is very lucky to have you. Not many horses who are destined for the sales end up so lucky. Laminitis is a horrible condition, but my mare has had it three times and with time, patience and much tlc they can recover. Best of lucky with your new purchase, please keep us posted. Nicky |

With a good vet and good management providing they haven't actually foundered they can recover fully.
I like Chance too |

Try and gt hold of the connemara pony society, google them. They were very helpful when I was trying to trace Zebedee's history. |

the pedal bone actually coming thru the sole of the foot - owch - too awful. They can be saved even at this stage though. Someone I know left and left her mare and kept saying oh she is pottery on one of her feet. It was only when she asked me to look that I could see a very dark red/purple line on the sole of her foot about 2 inches long and slightly curved and said to her you need to get the vet now that she got the vet. The little mare did come back and did make a recovery of sorts but was never 100% again. |

Painful. When i saw him on wed before he left there was no lines on sole of feet. He was very lame on front mainly the one leg and leaning back off both front legs. I have been in contact with the dealers while he has been in appleby who said they have been giving him bute and he has been tied up to the lorry since thursday standing there. So at least he wasnt on grass tethered. They have been treating the cuts (so they say) aswell. Just want him back and looked at now by vet.

Gosh. Well done Precious for doing something about it and buying this poor boy. No matter what the outcome, at least you know in your heart that you are doing your very best for him. Fingers crossed Fate will reward you for being such a good soul and rescuing Midnight Rebel. Good luck and let us know how he is when you get him later. |

You are a saint for giving him a second chance....Lami can be controlled, and if he's not actually got his pedal bone through his sole, you have a chance of getting him right!
Fingers crossed precious that he repays your faith....I have heard his name...I'm sure he's won something big somewhere. I'll keep looking.

O poor little horse.
I think horses/ponies should have random blood tests at sales to stop lame, unsound (body and mind) animals going though what you have saved 'Chance' from. (I like that name too) You see/hear of it going on so much. Why Why Why, oooo it makes me mad when people do the dirty. (sorry)
Lots of TLC and a really good once over from your vet and lots and lots of loving.
Fingers cross and well done for taking a risk.

Got tears in my eyes reading about this, part because of the situation the boy is in, part because it is so amazing to have people like you who put everything else aside to help a lost soul...
Truly wish you and the boy all the best, keep us updated, and if we can help with advice we surely will!

Precious what a wonderful thing you are doing, I really take my hat off to you. What a lucky lucky horse to be rescued by someone who is willing to take him on whatever the outcome.
Well done, be brave and keep us posted.

Yep, its scary what means dealers go to to sell a horse and all they are interested is the £ not the horse. I have heard so many nasty dangerous storys of dealers horses and false information once sold.
I do think if i didnt see "chance" midnight rebel on wed i wouldnt have to sell my lorry to pay people back. Must be Fate |

He may have an abcess if he is prominately lame in the one foot as well as lami. My mare often presents lame in one foot and this knocks her off her feet and brings on an attack. An abcess was what set her off with laminitis 14 years ago she was 16 and we hardly had any grazing but the vet said it was due to trauma rather than grass. Managed well horses can survive for years but ive found sometimes the slightest thing can set it off with our mare. Having said that she is 27 now! Good luck with him keep us updated. |

Precious, Please get in touch with Roger Hatch on 01243551766 as I do not think there are many people who know more about treating laminitis or most other conditions.
Well done for doing this. |
