I was wondering if anyone fancied taking a guess at the mature height of an arab gelding that is 14.2hh at 18 months, with his bum at least 2" higher than his withers and who is in a 5'9" rug?
I'd offer a prize for the closest guess but in 4 years time we will all have forgotten!

| Hi. There is an old fashioned way of allegedly estimating height. Get a piece of twine and measure between back of the fetlock to the elbow (sure there is a horsey term for this but i dont know it ) if you then use this length to measure upwards from the elbow up towards the wither. I am told this gives you a good estimate to the mature height? We have tried it on two horses but we wont know if its accurate for a couple of years yet :) i think height is quite a difficult thing to gauge until they are about 2, my friends horse is currently about 16.3 and two years old, he was in a 4ft 9 rug at 6 months, and my foal is 5 months and in a 4ft6, and i am guessing she will make about 15.2, another two year old, was in a 4ft6 at 6 months and is currently around 17hh, we think this boy is going to top 18hh and yet his mum was only 15.3, the stallion was a big lad but nowhere near the size this boy is going to make. If i had t bet on yours i would say 15.2, but dont ask me to put down any hard cash:) |

SarahA is Right, My Dad & I use that all the time,
Some factors that might vary this is, how much they get fed
how much light they get all soughts of things but we've found it to fairly acurate,
there is a certain age when this test is N/A I just can't remember it off the top of my head.
the thing I've noticed is that foals are born with the length of leg they will have as adults, its just their shoulders & body that changes..
(I have Arabian ponies) so if they reach more than 13 hhs then its a bonus for me,
although I have got an Arabian pony who is closer to 15 hhs |

My boy Shafeeq os is pure bred is 15.2 .. bum higher at mo again!!!.. and 21 months hes wearing 6.1 rug..
When he came to us May he was 14hh, think the grass has magic dust in it from the faries !!
Not sure of parents height will have to check out but think about the 15.2 height.. anybody know ?
We were hoping he would make 15hh ..

at 6 months they are about 85-87 5 of mature height
at 18 months they are about 93-95 % of mature height.

I'd say he would mature to be 15.2hh, can you check the length of his legs against his dam.
Though my mare was 14.1hh at four and she grew to be 15hh by 8, so be warned they can put in a late growth spurt.
I'm sure he will be lovely whatever size he ends up. |

| We keep comparing Sebby's legs to Commet's legs in teh hope that Sebby will end up bigger. Aged 2 he's nearly as big in terms off HH so hopefully he'll reach at least 15hh. |

Phew I've just tried Dots method and that suggests 15.1 to 15.2. I was beginning to worry that I had bought an elephant he grew so fast this summer! I expect he will slow up now its winter and he is a bit older..... He is my first youngster so wasn't quite sure what to expect. Will still be trying the string method tho as its intriguing me  |

Tasey is 15hh at the mo...so I *think* she may put on an inch or so before she has finished growing properly....Crinky is only 14.2hh, so she's like me, short!

| my boys in a 5ft6 rug and stands a good 15h, extremley short backed. at 5 he was measured with sjai at 14h2 and he grew another two inch til he was 8. depends on parents on maturity and that to how long it takes to mature. our brood mare was a late maturer and so are all her foals, but then they are all half arab too so both parents late maturers. our yearling is 14h3 at moment and her full sister is a year older and stands 15h2 expected to make 16h the both of them. |
