Mr Menace has been in horsepital for the last three days following a severe allergic reaction. As you know he's been a very itchy boy for some time but took a sudden and dramatic turn for the worse. Over the last two weeks he's seen the vet 4 times, had skin scrapings, cultures etc and been on 60 Hydroxyzine tablets a day (20 every 8 hours costing £10 a day!!).
Then his skin became red hot, very red in colour, swollen and oozing serum. Plus he's rubbed off a side plate size of skin from his anus area, the skin peeled off the surrounding areas. So there was nothing for it but to take him to horsepital, at first we thought he might need a skin graft but now the vet is hopeful that he won't need it.
He's now had extensive allergy testing and it turns out that one of the things that Dennis is allergic to Liphook has never come across in the history of allergy testing there. Andy Durham, the skin specialist treating Dennis has never heard of it and said that he will never forget Dennis - he is allergic to dogs. He's fine with cats and humans but not dogs. Thank god I don't have a dog!!
He's also very sensitive to wheat and horse chestnut and also sensitive to maize, mites and histamine. So having eliminated alfalfa and molasses from his diet I now need to eliminate whet and maize. I'm going to put him on Speedibeet and Readigrass.
He's on steroids and Hydroxyzine for the next 6 weeks.
Dennis certainly does not do things by halves does he.
My thanks must go to Emma and Viv who have been helped me endlessly behind the scenes and thanks to the dozens of messages I have had regarding the Menace .
'orses who'd 'ave 'em.

My god your right he certainly doesn't do things by halves. I looked at this thread as i got to the yard on Wednesday night to find my lad had some sort of allergic reaction too and had several huge weeping sores on his sides and quarters, have no idea what has triggered it has i have changed nothing and my mare is on exactly seem feed and bedding as him and she is fine. The vet gave him a jab of antihistamine and some fuciderm gel to put on the sores, touch would they are healing well and he seems fine now. After reading about Dennis my panic now seemed quite insignificant and like you say Horses who'd 'ave 'em. |

he knows how to do things properly. My mare is constantly lumpy and is allergic to a few things but shes manageable. I had allergy tests done and i am allergic to practically anything that involves plants and trees.
hope he makes a speedy recovery |

Sadly we don't know what specifically has caused this reaction, all we know what he reacted to on the allergy tests.
Got to Liphook this afternoon to see that he has rubbed another massive sore on his bottom, and one on the top of his tail. The whole area looks red and angry again, its also weeping serum and dozens of tiny pockets of pus. When I got him home I washed the whole area with warm water and hibbiscrub, loads more skin came off and then applied liberal sudocream.
Vet said that it could take 2-3 days before the steroids kick in so I have left him out as I don't want him damaging it any more. His field is completely surrounded in electric fencing so he has nothing to rub on.
He's on 40 Hydroxyzine antihistamine tablets and 20 steroid tablets a day for the next 6 weeks.
As I type this it is pouring with rain and blowing a gale, the wind is bitterly cold and I really want to bring him in. |

Oh no poor Dennis he really doesn't have much luck does he. Hope he is soon feeling better. Don't worry too much about the weather I'm sure we worry more than they do and it might help sooth his poor skin. |

Poor Dennis. He really doesn't deserve all this after what he has already been through, and neither do you Vera. Thank God though that he is with you and will get the best treatment available. Keep your chin up Vera, there has to be light at the end of that tunnel soon.

He didn't appear to mind having a night out. Baring in mind that he is fully clipped out and has a completely bald neck from the allergy testing, the vet has told me to keep him cool so he is only wearing a medium Wug. I put a lightweight Amigo over the top overnight as it has a neck cover but have taken that off for during the day.
The weather forecast tonight is worse than last night .
His skin is still hot to the touch and very sore where he has rubbed it raw. He mugs anyone near him to give him a scratch. |

My poor boy. Now he has small exploding pustules on his bottom and the underside of his dock. Vet said they are infected hair follicles. As I am gently rubbing them applying sudocream he really pushes into me to rub harder. If I knock the scab off a ball of pus comes out leaving behind a hole.
Hopefully the steroids will kick in soon, its been 2 days since he had the jab and tablets so fingers crossed.
A bonus is that he is loving the Readigrass and speedibeet, despite having 40 tablets in his tea ans 20 in his breakfast he is still woofing it down.
Barbara - I am paying the price for saying that I never had to call the vet to my previous arab, apart from her annual jabs she hardly ever saw the vet in the 21 years I had her. |

Oh that Dennis - he really is a menace isn't he!!
Hope all his drugs kick in soon and he's soon back to his old cool and itch free self. If I didn't already know he's spoilt rotten i'd think he was doing it for the attention.
Hugs to you and the Dennis xx |
