Afternoon all, long time no speak!
Hope everyone is well x

Anyone have a horse with a nasty cough atm?
Freya has a horrid cough, vet coming on Friday, but Splash had a touch of tracheitis the week before last, but a week of metacam [she can't have bute anymore, not since her gut problem at Christmas] cleared it up.
Vet said she'd seen a fair bit of it over the last month, but it wasn't contagious
Freya started coughing last week, so I stuck her on Bute, wrongly or rightly.
Anyway, it hasn't touched it, she's coughing way worse than Splash was, but hasn't gone off her food, and other than being more cuddly than normal, she's not depressed or lethargic...

Haven't changed anything, she's been out 24/7 this winter [rugged when needed] feed is the same, hay is the same, water is the same[!!]
Really random - and annoying

Cheers xx

Anyone have the same right now?

we haven't had anymore cases of equine herpes since February now so hopefully we won't get anymore, my lurgy horse is better now he has a nice clean nose he wasn't supposed to be doing many shows this year anyway.

I am sure there are horse dentists that do a good job however have to agree, I always have a vet that specialises in dentistry.
AnnaMaisy25 Posted - 14 Mar 2017 : 10:44:07 AM
Hi all

Teeth checked and sorted - needed a fair bit of work doing to her molars at the very back of her mouth
Which I'm annoyed about, her teeth were only checked 8 months ago... But sticking with the vet for the rest of her life for future dentist visits!
Vet suspects that was causing the cough, but only like 70% sure
So, just got to make sure she stops coughing by Thursday, but if she doesn't, I'll have vet back out to scope as it's not an infection [or Herpes!]

*There's a showing show next moth with quals? Is that it? Didn't read the event lists lol

As for the yard which is infected - as it is the untreatable Neurological EHV-1, the horse will either die or be euthanized when it takes the turn for the worse.
Vet was very sure there was no threat to us, only not to travel unnecessarily, or hack over to the yard.
So it isn't actually in Sharnbrook, it's inbetween village over towards a little village called Bletsoe

Which is good [for us at any rate]

xxxx

Hi, yes, Keysoe just up the road from yard, 15 minutes from home.
That's where I was working a couple of years ago - would love to go back!

Found out that the yard is one of the livery yards up on the A6, quite isolated and no one has been out to compete for a few weeks, so they're on lockdown. Vets treating them are my vets [who are coming tomorrow] so having Freya tested just in case
Keysoe have all the biosecurity measures out in force, they've got Showjumping this weekend, will see how many turn up

And maybe see any of you at Arab show, will probably amble up for an afternoon xxxx

We had outbreaks of equine herpes round here in January a few horses died as it was a neurological strain that is fatal we are in Hertfordshire, I had a scare a few weeks back one of my horses had yellow gunk pouring from his nose which is a symptom I got the vet out and he said it wasn't anything nasty or contagious thankfully.

Just to add to my worries with the coughing and gross stuff coming out of her nose [although it s white, not green or yellow]

WE HAVE A CONFIRMED OUTBREAK OF EHV-1 IN THE VILLLAGE
Sharnbrook Village has a confirmed case of EHV-1, contained as far as we know.
It is a private yard, but only about 500 yards from where our yard is.

For goodness sake.
So yeah
Anyone in the Bedfordshire are, North Beds to be exact, keep travelling to a minimum only, and follow yard protocol set by veterinary practices for contagious disease [obviously] xx

Armos has had tracheitis a couple of times (a couple of years ago and then last year) my vet also said she saw a lot of horses with it.She gave me a touch of cortisone ( for the inflamed throat) and antibiotic injections the first time and no work, it cleared nicely.Last year I wanted to try something less strong so had aerosol (antibiotic and cortisone again) it took longer but eventually cleared.I didn't know you could use Bute for tracheitis but I guess it's the same principle than cortisone.I also had to soak hay to avoid throat irritation (that was also why he couldn't work).
I think it's a bacterial or viral thing so it could be contagious, would make sense....

Does seem very random as both living out, plenty of fresh air and no change in feed. Could be a virus that has affected Freya and Splash in different ways? Only cough we have had for years was a pony allergic to straw and needing soaked haylage. Hope they both make a quick recovery.
