As I said already on previous threads it always makes me sad and angry to see old horses for sale or free to good homes.
So when last month I saw an ad for a 20 yrs old"Polish Arab"for sale for 500 euros I called the guy.I was told the horse was healthy and rideable.Decided I could afford keeping another one by cutting some expenses here and there and off I went to see him.
When they brought him I was quite shocked, poor boy has awful collapsed and swollen hind fetlocks, one front knee bigger than the other (due to an old injury as he has a scar behind it),a sarcoid on a chestnut and some smaller ones on his sheath, his tail feels as if it was broken but I suspect it's melanomas.Amazingly he's sound.
No arab of course,I would think he's an Anglo as he does have quite some arab in him (there was a front picture of his face on the ad),he's about 1.60 cm (sorry no good with hands and inches)
His passport was issued in '98 when passports became compulsory but you could just say what you wanted about age and I'm sure he was declared younger in view of a possible future sale, this boy seems to me closer to his 30s than 20s...No vaccinations and since the passport was issued he had passed 5 owners already...
These people rode him, adult men included, and by what I saw they are no good riders...they told me one of the previous owner did barrel racing and gimkanas with him...hence the damages to his legs.
Well I couldn't leave him there so he came home with me.Gave 300 euros to the guy although really he should have payed me!
Blue is a sweet old guy,he's eating well now, dentist coming next week.I gave him a good grooming yesterday in his paddock and he just stood there making satisfied faces,a lot of dull old hair is coming out and new hair looks more shiny and softer already. He must have been stabled a lot in his life,he weaves when feed time approaches.
He must have been a beautiful horse in his time and not a novice ride I suspect.
Of course he's never going to wear a saddle anymore,he doesn't seem to feel pain,so he'll just enjoy a well deserved retirement until he feels comfortable and happy.
I will update with more pictures (thank you Rui!) when he gets in better shape and will try to get in touch with first owner to see if I can find out his real age.

I am sorry for your loss, but he had a loving home with you till the end, hope you feel better and sadly there are still lots of lovely older Arabs looking for homes like yours. Keep your chin up and look forward to the next adventurer.

So very sorry that you have had to say goodbye to him, but at least he had a lovely 4years being loved and cared for. I had to say goodbye to my Arab mare this year, heartbreaking to do but it's the last kind thing we can do for them.

So sorry Pasch, take comfort in the love and quality of life you gave him x
FireLight Posted - 30 Nov 2017 : 6:58:46 PM
So sorry to hear this sad news. I have two polish boys, one looks very much like Blue, so always enjoyed your news on him. You gave him the best last few years even down to his last few days. Treasure your memories they never leave our thoughts.

I don't do Facebook so thank you for taking the time to let us know.
Ziadomira Posted - 30 Nov 2017 : 4:51:26 PM
We had the same problem with our Ziadomira. Her legs went and we realised it was he best thing we could do for her. He had good years with you and I am sure has left some wonderful memories. Thanks for posting on here. It is much more permanent than facebook where frequently I see something and can never find it again

Sad update: I had to let Blue go yesterday. He had very high Cushing, his tumours were getting bigger, his breathing worse (he had emphysema ) but mostly it was the pain in his poor legs that was unbearable.Until spring he was feeling and looking great, strutting his stuff tail in the air, then all his problems seemed to come up at the same time and his time had clearly come.
He enjoyed a last few days under a lot of painkillers as I wanted him to go feeling at least comfortable, was spoilt rotten, ate a lot of carrots, then went to sleep.I am heartbroken as I was hoping he would stay with me longer. But we had 4 lovely years together where all he was required to do was eating, grazing and looking beautiful.
This is for those who don't do Facebook or aren't my friends there.I am sorry that the only post on this otherwise sadly neglected forum is a sad one.
P.s. Vet said the only reason why he was still on his legs at the end was because there was a lot of Arab in him...

Remember old Blue? Thanks to Facebook I found a woman who owned him 10 yrs ago.She had stopped riding him as his fetlocks were starting to show some problems and gifted him to a friend who was looking for a mature horse to keep at home for his two small girls to play with. All was well for a couple of yrs then said friend went through a divorce, had to leave the house and ex wife sold Blue to a dealer. He then went on to 2 or 3 more owners ( who kept riding him..) until I got him.
Anyway, this woman and her family who had been wondering what happened to him since and feared him dead were overjoyed to hear he was alive and well and drove 4 hrs to come and see him.

Here are some pics of a 10 yrs younger and darker Blue showing off his Arab blood (70%apparently)

And pics of the reunion
Still remembering the carrot trick

With the family and me

With a daughter

So many cuddles today!

Blue was so happy and he seemed to remember them all.He enjoyed being the star of the day and of course having loads of carrots!

He's looking wonderful Pasch, thank goodness you gave him a haven
glo Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 10:25:19 PM
Yes I must admit that the 30 yo horse in the other post dose look half his age. A credit to his owners, since I have had my mare I have made sure that all the basics have been covered, to keep her fit and well as she gets older. Looking at the old horses advitised it's been well worth the cost over the years to keep her in the best condition health wise.

Ari, I know 20 is not that old, and I am sure if I was a bit slimmer, I wouldn't feel bad if I was to ride her! At the mo she is doing a fab job of growing a foal for me (well for her as well).

garnet Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 5:51:38 PM
How lovely to see this update! He's a lucky boy to have found someone to love him as he deserves.
Ari Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 3:56:19 PM
Pasch you are his . He is happy and content in your wonderful care. Glo, my mare at 20 was as fit as she had always been, retired to lead rein duties with granchildren at 27 still sound. She was with me from 3yrs and well looked after all her long life and made 30.5 years.
Pasch Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 3:26:42 PM
Thanks, glo a well kept horse at 20 is not old…with the right management, food, wormers, vet care, dentist and the right work a 20 years old horse can do pretty much anything (well not GP show jumping maybe but light to moderate work) and look great…I mean look at the pics of a 30 yrs old posted lately by an AL member…So basically yes I would say that those who look ancient do so because they are not looked after properly.I saw one recently who was skin and bones, how can people think to even advertise a horse in those conditions is beyond me.
If Blue could do some light work like short hacks he would feel and look even better but I really can't put more weight on him because of his hind legs.I do take him out on walks when I can and even with his legs can he walk!it's hard for me to keep his pace.I give him Msm and Devil's claw supplements and that seems to help. When he came he was grumpy and sad,now he's even a bit cheeky!
FireLight Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 3:19:57 PM
He is a credit to you, well done. He has such a beautiful and contented face that gives you a warm feeling.
glo Posted - 21 Jun 2015 : 2:03:53 PM
Nice to see he is well, he looks very content. Hard to think that he was almost being discarded. I to don't like to see older horses advitised for free, having said that, I almost brought a older horse in the spring. In stead I brought a youngster, the older seen it done it would have been better for me.

When I look at my old mare I don't think she looks old at 20, most of the ones advitised look 100 and past it! Is it because they are older or because they are not looked after.

I hope he is bringing you as much happiness as you are to him. Well done for going where I didn't have the nerve to.
